20th March 2019 – MSSA/CIDB Open Ideas Competition for Students (OIC) is open to students in the fields of architecture and civil engineering in Malaysia with the opportunity to collaborate in a building design that employs steel as the main structural and finishing material. It is envisioned that students will realize that building design does not lie within the individual jurisdiction of the architect or civil engineer, but is a means for them to arrive at a meaningful realization of both architectural fascination and structural manifestation. It also aims to bridge the gap between the training of architecture and civil engineering. All design strategies should achieve the goal of modernization with regards to sustainability, construct ability and functionality. 2018/2019 MSSA/CIDB OIC secretariat received a total of 55 group entries from 11 universities. All universities need to conduct their own internal selection and the maximum of five (5) groups shortlisted by each university will proceed in the second stage. In second stage, the Panel of Judges shall select the top ten (10) groups from all the participating universities to compete in Stage 3. UTM success to bring 3 groups in this stage. The ten (10) finalists are required to present a verbal presentation to a Panel of Judges on 2March 2019 at UITM Shah Alam, Selangor and then the selection of the five (5) winners will be made. Two (2) groups form UTM were announce as a top five winner in this final stage.

Today in conjunction with International Construction Week (ICW) organized by CIDB, team UTM were announce as winner for MSSA/CIDB OIC 2019 and bring back the RM10,000 in cash. The team was synergised form both Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying and School of Civil Engineering,Faculty of Engineering. The students are Jonathan Chong, Chan Kei Wern, Chow Zhen Nam, Julius Wang, Wong Sheng Yuen and Aw Khai Hoong successful supervised by Dr Abdul Halim bin Hussein and Ts. Mohd Zamri bin Ramli. The other UTM team won consolation prize and bring RM3,000 in cash.
