Bachelor of Civil Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) is offered either on a full-time or part-time basis. The full-time programme is the main programme, offered by the School of Civil Engineering while the part-time programme is offered by the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE). The full-time programme is offered only at the UTM Main Campus in Skudai while the part-time programme is offered at various centres throughout Malaysia. The duration of study for the full-time programme is subjected to the student’s entry qualifications and lasts between four (4) years to a maximum of six (6) years. The School of Civil Engineering offers a full-time 4-year undergraduate programme leading to the award of BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (CIVIL) degree. The curriculum has been developed with the following aspirations;

1.   To enhance the quality of learning and teaching in the academic environment;
2.   To disseminate engineering sciences which focused on quantitative, problem solving, design and engineering practice
3.   To incorporate the generic skills which include communication skill, leadership, social and environmental responsibilities awareness.
4.   To embed research attributes in courses

The curriculum provides competence graduates that satisfy the needs of industry. The effectiveness and quality of the curriculum is enhanced with proper assessment techniques on every course. The curricular approach, the educational content and the teaching-learning and assessment methods are appropriate, consistent with, and support the attainment to achieve the Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO), as described in the Section 3 and the preceding paragraphs.

Career prospects : Graduates of the programme can be employed as Project Engineers, Construction Engineers, Hydraulic Engineers, Environmental Engineers, Highway and Transport Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Site Engineers, Design Engineers and Structural Engineers.

Career as a civil engineer spans across a multitude of disciplines compared to other engineering fields. The services and expertise of a civil engineer are required when constructing amenities for the well-being of mankind as well as the preservation and rehabilitation of the environment. Amongst the major duties of a civil engineer include studying, planning, analysing, designing, constructing and maintaining infrastructure systems and buildings. Infrastructure systems can be defined to include roads and highways, airports, ports, bridges, traffic management, water supply, water treatment and sewerage, water resources management such as irrigation, drainage and the construction of dams. Meanwhile, building constructions encompass housing projects, skyscrapers and mega-buildings, off-shore structures and other systems utilised by mankind. Civil engineers are needed in virtually all public sectors that are involved with construction projects and maintenance of the aforementioned systems. As for the private sector, career opportunities for a civil engineer are aplenty. Civil engineering and project management firms, architects and contractors are among the many examples where the services of civil engineers are needed.

Many civil engineering graduates from UTM manage to secure positions in their final semester of studies. The record shows that, 85% of UTM’s civil engineering graduates are offered jobs within six months after the completion of their studies while the rest, within a year.

In the future, a civil engineer would have a bright prospect in tandem with the nation’s rapid development. In 2007, the construction industry provided more than 800,000 job opportunities in civil engineering. In order to achieve the nation’s aspirations in becoming a developed country, more civil engineers are needed to spearhead the nation’s construction industry.

Implementation of teaching and learning of pre-graduate and post-graduate courses of the School of Civil Engineering in Semester 2 Session 2020/2021


1) In relation to the above, I on behalf of the management of the School of Civil Engineering would like to inform that the school intends to implement teaching and learning in a blended / hybrid for undergraduate final year project, master project and research courses (PhD and M.Phil) in Semester 2 Session 2020/2021 . Through this method, students can only come to school if it involves laboratory activities only.


2) Survey Camp Course (SEAA1031) if offered will be conducted physically.


3) Apart from the above courses, the teaching and learning method is conducted online in semester 2 of the 2020/2021 session.


4) Also informed, the School of Civil Engineering also intends to conduct teaching and learning online for pre-graduate laboratory courses (SEAA2012 and SKAB 3012) in semester 2 of the 2020/2021 session.
