UTM’s Pavement & Transportation Research Group Explores Strategic Collaboration with MBJB and JBIOCC
(By: Azman Mohamed)

Johor Bahru, 30 April 2025 – A delegation from the Pavement & Transportation Research Group (PTRG), Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), recently visited Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB) to explore strategic collaboration opportunities in enhancing urban transportation systems, road maintenance strategies, and sustainable development within the city.

Discussion at MBJB’s Engineering Department (Civil Engineering) – Lead by Ts. Ir. Mazlifah Isa

PTRG is a specialized research unit within UTM dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice in pavement engineering, road materials, and intelligent transportation systems. Over the years, PTRG has played a pivotal role in developing innovative solutions for transportation infrastructure, particularly in tropical and urban environments. The group is known for its interdisciplinary research, community engagement, and close ties with public and private sector stakeholders.

During the visit, the UTM delegation held meetings with MBJB’s Engineering Department (Civil Engineering) and the Johor Bahru Integrated Operation Control Centre (JBIOCC). JBIOCC plays a critical role in monitoring and coordinating city-wide operations such as traffic flow, emergency response, and municipal services through the integration of smart city technologies. UTM’s collaboration with JBIOCC is seen as a valuable opportunity to bring academic expertise into real-time urban management, particularly in areas like traffic pattern analysis, sensor data interpretation, and system optimization.“This partnership reflects our shared vision for a smarter, more resilient Johor Bahru,” said a representative from MBJB. “Collaborating with UTM allows us to combine practical governance with academic excellence to create innovative, community-centered solutions.”

A UTM spokesperson added, “Our collaboration with MBJB and JBIOCC will not only provide meaningful learning experiences for our students and researchers but also drive impactful changes that directly benefit the people of Johor Bahru.”

Beyond academic and technical goals, the collaboration is expected to bring direct benefits to the Johor Bahru community. Improved road quality, reduced traffic congestion, and more efficient urban services can significantly enhance the quality of life for residents. For UTM, the partnership represents an opportunity to contribute to nation-building through real-world application of research and technology.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to move forward with structured programs, workshops, and a formalized MoU, paving the way for sustainable growth, smart infrastructure, and improved urban mobility in Johor Bahru.
