  2. International student (https://admission.utm.my/entry-requirements-ug-international/)

Career as a civil engineer spans across a multitude of disciplines compared to other engineering fields. The services and expertise of a civil engineer are required when constructing amenities for the well-being of mankind as well as the preservation and rehabilitation of the environment. Amongst the major duties of a civil engineer include studying, planning, analysing, designing, constructing and maintaining infrastructure systems and buildings. Infrastructure systems can be defined to include roads and highways, airports, ports, bridges, traffic management, water supply, water treatment and sewerage, water resources management such as irrigation, drainage and the construction of dams. Meanwhile, building constructions encompass housing projects, skyscrapers and mega-buildings, off-shore structures and other systems utilised by mankind. Civil engineers are needed in virtually all public sectors that are involved with construction projects and maintenance of the aforementioned systems. As for the private sector, career opportunities for a civil engineer are aplenty. Civil engineering and project management firms, architects and contractors are among the many examples where the services of civil engineers are needed.

Many civil engineering graduates from UTM manage to secure positions in their final semester of studies. The record shows that, 90% of UTM’s civil engineering graduates are offered jobs within six months after the completion of their studies while the rest, within a year.

In the future, a civil engineer would have a bright prospect in tandem with the nation’s rapid development. In 2007, the construction industry provided more than 800,000 job opportunities in civil engineering. In order to achieve the nation’s aspirations in becoming a developed country, more civil engineers are needed to spearhead the nation’s construction industry.

Award Requirement

To graduate, students must:

  • Attain a total of not less than 137 credit hours with a minimum CGPA of 2.00.
  • Has passed all specified courses.
  • Has applied for graduation and has been approved by the University.
  • Has completed all five (5) Professional Skills Certification (PSC) courses in UTM.
  • Other conditions as specified.

What Is Civil Engineering ?

Civil engineering is a broad discipline that encompasses studies on structures and the natural resources such as water, soil and the environment. It is also considered as an important technological discipline towards the betterment of mankind.

The faculty offers an undergraduate programme which is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The programme has also been certified with the ISO 9001:2008 certificate. The undergraduate programme is implemented to encompass four (4) thrust areas, which are :-

Structures and Materials

Civil engineering materials, mechanics of materials, dynamics and static, theory and design of structures and buildings, contract and estimation, principles an practices of construction and management.

Geotechnic & Transportation

Soil mechanics, foundation engineering and materials, geology, highway design and planning, traffic and transportation.

Hydraulics & Hydrology

Fluid mechanics and designs of surface and underground water resources system, dams, sewerage systems, water reticulation & drainage and irrigation, offshore, port and hydraulic structures.

Environmental

Monitoring and control of environmental qualities, drinking water, waste water, disposal and solid wastes, thus, ensuring the natural resources is utilised in a manner that guarantees the well being of mankind and environmental stability.

These thrust areas pave the way into the applications of information technology in civil engineering, for instance, the use of computer in analysis, the design and development of software and sub-routines in solving various civil engineering problems.

Why Civil Engineering at UTM?

Each graduate will be endowed with the emphasis of solving civil engineering problems innovatively and creatively based on a strong technical knowledge. Graduates will also be trained to have professionalism & leadership qualities, effective communication and the ability to adapt towards changes. The curriculum at UTM ensures that graduates are exposed to problem based learning as well as lifelong learning skills which are salient towards their career and personal development.

The faculty provides up-to-date, comprehensive and technologically advanced teaching and learning facilities and infrastructures. The laboratory facilities available are also one of the best and state of the art.

A pool of highly competent and highly regarded academic staff within the faculty ensures graduates will receive a high quality learning experience. The strength of the faculty is made up of 150 academic staff, of whom, 79 are PhD holders in various fields from universities all over the world. At present, out of the 150 strong academic staff, 23 and 44 are Professors and Associate Professors respectively, who provide high impact learning and research activities in the faculty.

Student’s Activities

Graduate life in the faculty is exciting and challenging. Various on-going activities such as site visits, industrial training, students’ exchange, global outreach programme, expeditions, community service, conferences & colloquiums and education-based competitions are conducted to ascertain that graduates possess the necessary soft-skills.
