Paving the Way: Civil Engineering Students Go Beyond Books at Sunway Paving Solutions

On July 4, 2025, Eleven dedicated Civil Engineering students from the course of Pavement Design & Construction participated in an enriching industrial visit to Sunway Paving Solutions Sdn Bhd, located in Senai, Johor. This visit was organized as a key component of their curriculum, aimed at providing students with hands-on exposure to the practical aspects of civil engineering within the paving industry.

Led by Ts Dr. Azman Mohamed and Associate Professor Ts Dr. Haryati Yaacob from the Pavement & Transportation Research Group (PTRG), the students had the opportunity to observe the entire manufacturing process of Interlocking Concrete Paving Blocks (ICPB). During the visit, students were guided through the production facilities, where they gained insights into the technologies and methodologies employed in the creation of ICPB, which is widely used in modern pavement design.

The delegates also participated in interactive sessions with industry professionals who shared their expertise and experiences regarding the challenges and innovations present in pavement construction. These discussions included topics such as material selection, quality control, and the importance of sustainable practices in paving solutions.

“This visit allowed us to connect our theoretical knowledge to actual industry practices,” remarked one of the participating students. “Seeing the process of how interlocking concrete paving blocks are manufactured and used in real projects was incredibly inspiring, and it has deepened my understanding of the importance of our coursework.”
