INTRODUCTION
With the rapid changes taking place in the world today, there is an ever increasing need to understand and control the associated environmental problems. With increasing urbanization and industrialization, engineers and other professionals are continually faced with problems related to the provision of an adequate supply of safe and potable water, the prevention of water pollution, the maintenance of air quality, the satisfactory disposal of domestic and solid wastes and the control and management of hazardous wastes.
Recognizing the need for education and training of personnel that can handle such problems efficiently, the Department of Environmental Engineering was established in 1976. Although it is the smallest department in the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the task assigned to the department is huge considering the magnitude of environmental problems facing the nation. Besides providing a sound environmental engineering education to Diploma and B.Sc. students in Civil Engineering, the department also undertakes research, provides consultancy services to industry as well as offering postgraduate courses and continuing education through short courses and seminar sessions to practicing scientists and engineers in environmental related fields.
The department has rapidly expanded its staff and facilities in the last four years. From a staff of 5 in the beginning, the department now has 22 academic staff from various background necessitated by the multi-disciplinary approach of the environmental engineering field.
