Unafraid to criticise her native land of China, her adoptive land of America, her family, her culture, and herself, Yiyun Li is above all things honest, and one of the most revolutionary female Asian writers as a result. In so many ways, the women of East Asian literature are the prominent voices of their cultures today. The organization publishes AsiaNetwork Exchange, a peer-reviewed journal for Asian studies in the liberal arts. The Research Grants Council of Hong Kong offers the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme. For example, it is not uncommon in East Asia for women to be asked during job interviews if they have a boyfriend, if they plan to get married and to have a child etc. In this way, companies openly manifest their unwillingness to hire women who are planning to start a family. By contemporary Western standards, this would be seen as a violation of the employee’s personal sphere. But in Asia, women may in private complain, but very few of them will take action against such practices. According to Stop AAPI Hate, there were 3,795 reported incidents of anti-Asian hate between March 2020 and February 2021.

East Asia & Pacific

Four courses, at least two of which must be EAL-prefix courses in Japanese literature and culture. Four courses, at least two of which must be EAL-prefix courses in Chinese literature and culture. At least three EAL-prefix courses in Japanese literature or culture, including a departmental seminar. Students concentrating on Japan are strongly encouraged to take both EAL 241 and 242, but they must take at least one of the two. Democratisation emboldened Korean and Taiwanese feminists. They became increasingly organised, outspoken, and assertive. Women rallied against sexual harassment and secured accountability. Emulating the Japanese experience, factory managers in South Korea, Taiwan, and China sought to capitalise on low-cost, educated, disposable labour – in food-processing, textiles, electronics, and subsequently services.

Harmful stereotypes of Asian women in America influenced the first U.S. immigration law based on race, the Page Act of 1875, preventing Chinese women from entering the United States. These women were feared to lack moral character, were assumed to engage in prostitution, and spread sexually transmitted diseases to white men. At the same time, the coercive opening of treaty port cities in China, Japan, and Korea as a result of Western imperialism created a trade route to feed demand for Oriental art and collectibles, which often depicted sexualized geishas. In Cornel West’s book, Race Matters, he describes the flaws of American society and its roots in historical inequalities and longstanding cultural stereotypes. In terms of Asian Americans, he states that their negative depiction continued through the nineteenth century as a yo-yo effect from “bad” to “good” to “bad” depending on the political climate at that time. The increase of Western power and presence in Asia also spawned well-known works of art that contributed to the depiction of Asian women as simultaneously innocent and over sexualized.

Coupled with the poverty of local women, this created a booming sex industry, which further perpetuated the stereotype of Asian women as submissive and hypersexual. She is then overpowered and carried off to bed as if she is nothing but a trophy. As Richard E. Lee points out, Tzu’s ambivalent position as both object of desire and seductive destroyer of the family is redeemed only by her collaboration with the White man and her ultimate devotion to him. These cinematic misrepresentations of Asian women portray them as eager to please the man that owned them and something to be desired or conquered. All of which have contributed to the misconception of Asian women even today, contributing to the subconscious, and dehumanizing thinking that may lead to sexual assault upon them. Coming back to the U.S. from the Korean and Vietnam Wars, American G.I.s brought women as war brides, contributing to the perception of Asians as passive trophies and victims without agency. The derogatory term yellow fever is sometimes used to describe the fetishisation of East Asians by people of other ethnicities, especially among non-Asians, as well as having a preference for dating people of East Asian origin.

Women who speak for the sidelined and the unrepresented, women who show us our lives and our cultures from an original perspective, women who can teach us love and pain and quiet introspection.
