Our Purpose

UTM-CEAD 2019

It all started in 1904 when the TREACHER TECHNICAL SCHOOL began its operation at Weld Road (now Jalan Raja Chulan) as a centre to train Technical Assistants. It was later upgraded to the status of Technical College in 1905, offering courses at Diploma level.

In March 1972, His Majesty DYMM Yang Dipertuan Agong officially proclaimed the formation of INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI KEBANGSAAN (ITK). On 1st April 1975, the institute reached another milestone of its history when it was officially declared as UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA (UTM). The Faculty of Civil Engineering initially was a Department of Engineering in 1972 and later became
a faculty in 1975.

In 1989, the faculty was relocated from the UTM Kuala Lumpur Campus at Jalan Semarak to UTM Johor Bahru Campus, and grew to have four departments: Structure and Materials, Hydraulics and Hydrology, Geotechnics and Transportation, and Environmental Engineering.

According to the QS World Ranking 2017,
UTM represented by the Faculty of Civil Engineering was in the top 100 rank in the world and ranked top in Malaysia for Civil Engineering Courses. It was also ranked top 100 in Civil Engineering under the Shanghai Ranking. To date, the faculty held the number one position in Malaysia QS World Ranking in Engineering – Civil and Structural subject. In addition, the faculty was ranked 53rd based on employers’ reputation worldwide, which indicates that our graduates are highly sought after.

With the strength of 126 academic and 79 support staffs, the faculty stand tall in various fields of Teaching and Learning, Research, Consultancy and Publication related to Civil Engineering. At the end of 2018, there were 17,933 undergraduate and 2,582 postgraduate students graduated from the faculty.

In line with UTM Synergy 4.0, the faculty is now known as School of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering since 1st July 2018.

With such great accomplishments, it is time to celebrate the success of the school’s alumni. At the same time, the dinner is aimed to raise fund for the UTM Endowment in improving the school’s infrastructure, academic facilities and providing the needs of B40 students.
