Besides having teaching as the core business, this department is also highly dynamic in research and consultancy especially in the field of water quality management, water and wastewater treatment including wastewater stabilization pond, design, membrane analysis and construction of simple water supply system for small communities and improvement of the water treatment processes. Other field of research that is also actively studied here is solid and hazardous waste management. Most of the funding is obtained from the Research and Consultancy Unit of UTM and IRPA, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and other private agencies.
