SAB 4052

Course objectives:

To integrate all civil engineering disciplines using a group project format. Students (in groups of 10) will experience the learning process  of combining and integrating planning and conceptual design concepts, encompassing portable water and surface runoff design, environmental engineering, road and traffic engineering, framed building design and geotechnical engineering for the development of a major portion of a civil infrastructure project.

Computations, some specifications and design drawings will be prepared for a land development project.  The elements of the development to be addressed include distribution of potable water, collection of wastewater, surface water drainage, road and signalized junctions, multi storey residential housing units, detention pond for storm water runoff, and preparation of a final grading plan.

Course implementation:

Series of lectures on basic infrastructure design processes will be conducted in the first 4 weeks of the semester, followed by group project work executed over the entire 11 remaining weeks. Each group is expected to fully utilize 4 contact hours per week (2 sessions of 2 contact hours) during the project work design working in a ‘simulated’ design office environment and closely monitored by PAP teaching staff and invited industry participants.

Student groups shall submit a ’Preliminary Proposal Report’ / ‘Poster Presentation’ (Stage 1) midway through the course duration (usually at week 7 of a full 15 week semester duration). This report shall outline the proposed infrastructure schemes which may include suitable locations of utility facilities (water tank, sewerage treatment plant, detention ponds etc), suggested materials for water/sewer/drainage pipes, typical road cross section templates indicating basic dimensions including utility corridor, surface runoff discharge point/s, suitability of road network including major entry and exit road junctions, interpretation of type of soil overall affecting major foundation types to be applied and other elements that could influence the final component design.

At the end of week 14 or 15 each group shall be required to submit a bounded copy of the ‘Final Report’ (Stage 2) ie. a comprehensive engineering report which includes detailed design proposals and calculations, engineering plans and details, schematics, etc. based on comments and amendments suggested by course facilitators from their respective ‘Preliminary Proposal Report’ submitted earlier. Students are then required to defend their respective integrated design proposals in an oral interview / presentation usually conducted in the later stages of the semester.

Course deliverables shall include a comprehensive group technical report (compulsory), a 3 minute short animation of their integrated design proposal (optional) and  A1 posters of their technical proposal (Stage 1 submission).

Industry participants to be included:

  • Ir  MAT LAZIM ZAKARIA Director Perunding MLA
  • Ir  AHMAD KAMAL ABDUL HAMID Director PWM Associates

Industry participants/facilitators shall be appointed by the faculty to facilitate and oversee the progress and development of the integration process structure of the simulated real life civil engineering project undertaken by the students. Issues on understanding the principles of integration of water-sewerage-road-drainage-building-geotechnical design shall be given top priority by these external professional practicing engineers such as to expose the students to real life design solution procedures.

Course evaluation:

  • 70% of the total course marks will be evaluated from the respective group report
  • Remaining 30% will be evaluated based on the interview/presentation session

A.   REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (STAGE 1)

A new mixed development comprising housing and commercial buildings is proposed over a area bounded by an existing main artery road 100 m wide (ROW) in the North Eastern direction and another existing main artery road 60 wide (ROW) in the South West and South East  direction. The overall site topography is undulating and the soil parameters reflect a type of subsoil consisting of  THREE (3) distinctive soil formations of Alluvium, Residual Soil and Granitic Rock.

Your company has been requested to propose a  two (2) ‘conceptual  infrastructure development plan’ so as the proposed development complements the existing recreational emphasis of an existing river close to the proposed site. Sustainable and alterative energy/resources  issues might be the selling point of this development. The ‘conceptual infrastructure development plan’ should address the basic infrastructure development listed below:

  1. Main intersection  (signalized/non signalized) between the access road of proposed development and existing two lane dual carriageway artery road, traffic circulation within the new development area, Traffic Impact Assessment study requirements, existing main road detail survey, etc
  2. Water supply scheme inclusive of proposed location of elevated water tank, suction tank, reticulation pipes, connection to existing main water pipe, etc
  3. Sewerage disposal scheme including proposing a suitable location for the sewerage treatment plant, type of STP, sewer reticulation pipes, intermediate pumping stations if required etc.
  4. Storm water drainage and artificial ponds (detention ponds), discharge points, types of drainage (concrete drain/earth swale), connection to existing roadside drains etc.
  5. Proposed platform levels and grades to overall site, to complement existing road level, to complement proposed sewerage and drainage proposal plan, location of silt traps, wash troughs etc

POSTER PRESENTATION CONTENTS:

The Poster Presentation session shall be held on Wednesday  04/04/2012. Each group shall display their respective proposals in poster form (minimum 3 sheets, maximum 5 sheets : indicating  preliminary drawings, cross sections, sketches, specifications etc for each scheme) that summarizes the development concept to be considered. Posters shall also include the group consultant name, organization chart, proposed work schedule showing milestones and scope of work assigned to all group members. Listed below are several important issues that has to be addressed in your ‘Poster Presentation’

                           i.          Overall Development Details (1 scheme for both alternative proposal)

All groups shall propose composition of development details such as location and no of units of 1 storey houses, 2 storey houses, 2 storey shop houses, 3 storey shop houses, 1 no primary school (capacity ??), 1 no. nursery/preschool, 2 storey mosque (capacity??), 1 block 2 storey community centre (capacity??), 3 blocks 3 storey commercial centre (capacity??), 2 nos petrol station, 1 market place (capacity??). From this assumption, each groups can estimate total population of proposed development, total water demand, total sewerage discharge, etc.

                           i.          Contour Plan (1 scheme for both alternative proposal)

Each group shall propose their own site topography and superimpose the topography plan onto the proposed development plan. Locate the most suitable location for utilities plant such as STP, main water tank, detention pond etc. Also note possible proposed/platform level/s  for overall development on plan.

                         ii.          Proposed Levels (2 schemes)

Propose 2 platform/proposed  levels schemes for the overall development plan. Avoid proposing a single platform/proposed level for the entire development plan unless strongly justified to adopt such measures. Create existing water bodies (rivers or lakes etc.) close to project site if necessary.

iii.          Road Cross Sections (2 schemes)

Propose typical road cross sections for various ROW given in site plan: ex. 24m, 12m and 9m width. These values indicate the total width to be developed ie. Typical road widths plus utility corridor on either side of the road plus landscape areas/pedestrian walkway?? Each group shall adopt a unified cross section  template (utilities :sewerage pipes/water supply pipes/ roadside drain)

iv.          Drainage, Sewerage and Water Supply (2 schemes)

Propose 2 schemes each for water reticulation scheme/network for water supply pipes and sewerage reticulation pipes for the overall development plan indicating most suitable locations for main central water tank/suction tank and sewerage treatment plant STP. Also propose 2 overall drainage schemes including location of detention pond/s and location of possible drainage discharge outlet. Be sure to adhere to unified road and utility cross section template you have developed earlier in (iii).

                          v.          Geotechnical Parameters (final scheme only)

Propose the most suitable/likely location of site investigation (SI) to be carried out for the overall development plan (SI report has already been uploaded via e-learning). Also propose the type of soil tests SI most suitable assuming the whole development area is on firm ground.

vi.         Overall Design and Material Specifications (for each scheme???)

Propose overall material specifications such as types of water and sewerage pipes to be used, types of drain (exposed/swale type), material for main water tank/suction tank, concrete grades for rc structures, road pavement material,

                         vii.      Sustainable Development/Design Considerations (optional)

Propose where possible, design issues that could address the issue of sustainability development. Sustainable issues that could be addressed may include (but not limited to ) reusable/recycled construction materials??, reusable energy (wind or solar energy????), recycled water (rain water harvesting???), controlled/minimum earthwork etc
