Towards The Ductile Use Of High-Strength Concrete!

High-strength concrete (HSC) has gained its popularity globally in both academic and construction industry recently. It is only a matter of time before it makes an impact in Malaysia. The most remarkable development in the utilization of HSC in Malaysia is the well-known Petronas Twin Tower project which has been developed in Kuala Lumpur city center where 80 MPa HSC has been specified for lower-storey columns. Apart from that, the usage of HSC has been very limited. This is mainly due to the brittleness problems of HSC. My research team is working on solving this problem. We have established a confining method using low-cost recycled steel straps with self-regulated end clips and it has been found to be very effective in reducing the brittleness of HSC.
